Originally started in Elko Nevada, the University of Nevada later moved to Reno in the 1880s as a land-grant institution to provide education for the growing population of the Truckee Meadows and Virginia City gold boom.
Today, the University of Nevada, Reno has a 120+ year legacy of academics, sports and athletics and research. Strong programs that the university ranks well at among the USA’s colleges include: Journalism, Mining Engineering, Micro-viral medical research, Part-time MBA, Seismic research and many more.
The University’s grounds are a beautiful mixture of old and new, with historic buildings surrounding the famous lower Quad, along with the interactive Joe Crowley Student Union and the advanced IGT-Mathewson Knowledge Center.
Public Transportation
Located a short 10 minute walk from downtown Reno, where the central 4th-street bus center, Greyhound bus station, Amtrak bus station, and short ride from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. Bus lines serving the university area include Line 7 (N. Virginia street), Sierra Spirit (free), and 17 (east side, Evans/Valley). More city bus information at RTC Website

Weather / Climate
High, dry, cool. The Reno-area is a high-desert climate influenced by Sierra ridge winds from Pacific Ocean weather patterns. Winters are dry and cold with some moderate snowfall (heavy in nearby mountains). Spring is a season of unstable change and a series of storms and dry spells. Due to the mountain altitude, Spring snowfall into April, May and sometimes June is not uncommon. Summers are short and hot, with strong sunshine, and cool mornings. Autumn/Fall is warm, short and transitions to cold temperatures in October/November.
Altitude: Approximately 4,600 feet
Averages for Reno (truckee meadows): January 45F High/14F Low, July 95F High/53F Low. Extremes: All-time low: -19F. All-time High 108F.
